 Internship may be based in Anchorage or Kenai, AK.

Under supervision of the Forestry Director, the Wildland Fire and Fuels Intern will assist forestry staff in planning, management, and administration of the ongoing Sterling Fuel Break project and other hazardous fuels reduction projects in which Chugachmiut is involved. 

Major Responsibilities:
Internship Objectives:

Under the guidance of the Forestry Director the intern will be trained, and gain understanding and assist in planning efforts related to the Sterling Fuel Break and other hazardous fuels reduction projects that includes:

  • Aid in plan writing and hazardous fuel reduction prescription development.
  • Collecting of pre and post treatment vegetation data across field sites.
  • Aid in compiling vegetation data, creating databases and updating databases.
  • Aid in hazardous fuels reduction mapping.
  • Aid in developing wildland fire models.
  • Aid in UAV data collection operations.
Education Requirements:
  • Pursuing a post-secondary degree in environmental or natural sciences.
  • Experience in biological data management and analysis preferred.
  • High school diploma or GED is required.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

  • Ability to write or learn to write technical planning documents.
  • Basic knowledge of GIS mapping and analysis
  • Ability to use or learn coding languages R and Python.
  • Experience working with biological datasets preferred (compilation, cleaning, and basic analysis.)

Physical Environment:

The following demands are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this internship. The physical demands of the position require that the incumbent be in good physical condition.  Field work may involve rigorous outdoor climbing, and lifting, under adverse weather conditions.  This position requires travel, extended hours, and widely varied work environments, including remote physical areas, high altitudes, dangerous animals, and some degree of physical danger, and may be required to lift approximately 30 pounds.  Travel to remote locations by boat, snowmobile, ATV or small plane is required and employee must be willing and able to travel.

Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

The following PPE is required for this position and must be worn while preforming duties. Failure to properly wear PPE after training may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination:

  • Hardhat
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Proper outdoor gear
Hours of Work:
The internship schedule is Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with one hour for lunch. Chugachmiut maintains a drug/alcohol and non-smoking work environment.
