The AISES – Advancing Indigenous People in STEM cooperative agreement with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Office of Tribal Relations serves to highlight Indigenous Knowledge research. The Indigenous Knowledge Research Program encourages high school, undergraduate, and graduate students to develop and conduct Indigenous Knowledge (IK) research projects, and elevate the intersection of Indigenous knowledge (IK) and western science and engineering.

Now in the second year of the program, 20 students will be selected and announced nationwide by AISES and USDA as Indigenous Knowledge Student Researchers, supported in a skill development journey from March 2024 – October 2024 to learn best practices in IK research, and be awarded a $300 stipend.
Skill development will include:
  • $300 stipend to support your IK research.
  • Access to IK resources and learning materials.
  • A mentor at USDA for western science components to your research, if needed/requested.
  • Virtual sessions with experts on a variety of topics related to IK and research, ranging from data sovereignty to applying for grant funding.
  • Monthly check ins to share out research progress and gather feedback.
As students, considering your capacity for time and commitment is important for your wellbeing. Skill development will be ongoing until October 2024. Stipends will be awarded in May, however participants will be expected to participate in the following to ensure skill development and research progress prior to receiving the stipend:
  • Introductory meeting
  • Attendance to at least 2 virtual sessions.
  • Attendance to May and June monthly check ins.
Exceptions for these expectations will be considered based on individual circumstances.
Eligible applicants include current high school, undergraduate, and graduate students in the United States. The review committee will prioritize Indigenous applicants. The priority deadline for submission is March 29, 2024. Selected participants will be notified within the month of April. Please contact Sky Wildcat at swildcat@aises.org for more questions.
