JOB TITLE: EcoCultural Stewardship Manager
REPORTS TO: Executive Director
JOB TYPE: Non-exempt
LOCATION: This position is based in Upper Lake, CA in Lake County with field work within Lake County and surrounding areas. Hybrid work environment possible (minimum 6 days per month in-person).
SALARY: Salary commensurate with experience: $28.85 – $36.05 hourly ($60,000 – $75,000 annually) at 100% FTE. Flexible if part-time is desired, minimum of 20 hours/week required.
BENEFITS: 401k, $500 monthly health insurance reimbursement, on-the-job training, 13 holidays, 12 paid time off days, 5 days sick leave (total 30 days/year paid time off for regular full-time employees).
ORGANIZATIONAL VISION
The Tribal EcoRestoration Alliance (TERA) is a cross-cultural, multi-organizational collaborative that works to revitalize ecology, economy, and culture through indigenous-led stewardship. The mission of TERA, founded in 2019, is to cultivate land stewardship, livelihood, and leadership skills that weave collaborative relationships between Tribal members and the community at large for the benefit of all lands and beings. Our program goals include:
- Strengthen ties to land and culture
- Connect tribal members with meaningful livelihoods and culturally relevant work in their ancestral territories
- Regenerate local ecology of the North Coast Ranges, and improve resilience to fire
- Build capacity for Native voices to play a central role in land stewardship
TERA is in a dynamic growth phase and is building a team of professionals who are deeply committed to TERA’s vision. TERA is a fiscally sponsored project of the 501c3 nonprofit Occidental Arts & Ecology Center (OAEC), who provides administrative support for the project as fiscal sponsor.
POSITION SUMMARY
The EcoCultural Stewardship Manager is an organized, detailed-oriented manager who thrives in carrying a project from inception to completion. The ideal candidate has project management experience and knowledge of California coast range ecology and stewardship. The EcoCultural Stewardship Manager will work closely and collaboratively with the Executive Director (ED), Fuels Captain (FC), and partner organizations, to plan, implement, and oversee all aspects of ecocultural stewardship projects from conception to completion. Projects include prescribed and cultural burns, fuels reduction, oak woodland restoration, riparian restoration, and invasive plant removal. The position is estimated to be approximately 80% administrative work in the office, and 20% field work.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Attend site visits with ED and create site/project assessments
- Follow tribal consultation processes when working on tribal lands
- Prepare proposals and create relevant materials (such as written summaries, spec sheets, drawings) to communicate goals and methods to clients and TERA staff
- Support planning and implementation of prescribed and cultural burns and other restoration projects
- Develop and adapt field staff schedule as needed
- Prepare tools, materials, equipment and supplies lists
- Develop project monitoring protocols and implement with field staff
- Track progress on projects and provide project updates to partners
- Manage budget and timeline to track progress for TERA field projects
- Work with ED and FC to orient and provide ongoing support to the job site crew
- Coordinate project partners and manage subcontractors
- Manage the CEQA process for relevant projects
- Work on grant proposals, budgets, and project plans
- Support grant reporting and administration
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Preferred Qualifications:
- AA /AS or Bachelor’s Degree in ecology, natural resources, forestry, or related field OR equivalency of 2-4 years experience working within the natural resources field
- Familiarity with the concept and application of Traditional Ecological Knowledge
- Experience working with Tribal nations or willingness to learn about contemporary challenges, concerns, and interests of Lake County Tribal community and ecology
- 2 years experience as Project Manager implementing fuels management and/or restoration projects
- Working experience with CEQA and NEPA processes
- Proficient mapping skills – preferably GIS, Google Earth and/or CalTopo
- 2 years of field work
Skill Sets:
- Experience working with Tribal communities and tribal consultation process
- Proficiency and flexibility with office technology including PCs, digital camera, conference calls (Zoom), Word, and Excel
- Able to work with diverse groups and build and maintain strong working relationships
- Able to develop and follow a prioritized plan of work, set and keep deadlines, and work on multiple projects concurrently
- Strong communication skills with the ability to listen well, and write and speak effectively
- Able to contribute to a high-functioning, collaborative team environment
- Vehicle and valid driver’s license
