Under direct supervision of the Squad/Crew Boss Engine Captain, this position will assist in all aspects of wildland and prescribed fire operations including preparation, ignition, monitoring, holding, mop-up, and rehabilitation. Incumbent will perform tasks to control and extinguish wildfires as needed. This position is comprised mostly of actual fieldwork with some time spent in the office.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Serves as a Firefighter (FFT2) on a Wild land Fire Suppression Crew.
2. Assists in all aspects of wild land and prescribed fire operations including preparation, ignition,
monitoring, holding, mop-up, and rehabilitation.
3. Collects fire weather data, fuel and/or soil samples, map projects, and maintains appropriate records,
including fire reports.
4. Assists the Fire Captain in collecting and evaluating weather information, fuels, topography, and fire
behavior data for wild land fires.
5. Operates portable pumps, chain saws, and other common fire equipment.
6. Performs tasks to control and extinguish wildfires as needed.
7. Responsible for vehicle logs, maintenance and upkeep of all vehicles, equipment, or other fire related
gear.
8. 10. Available for extended emergency incident dispatches (14-28 days) anywhere needed.
9. Performs other related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
1. GRADE 3: High school diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
2. GRADE 4: Highschool diploma or GED with one year specified experience. Employee must be willing to
acquire any special certifications or attend any training that is determined to be relevant or becomes
required of the position in the future.
3. Candidates with equivalent combinations of education, training and experience will be considered.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
4. Basic 32 Fire Training and required refresher training.
5. Work capacity test at the arduous level.
6. Sufficient physical strength and dexterity to accomplish fieldwork (Work Capacity test-Arduous).
7. Demonstrable ability to use originality and good judgment in adapting accepted practices and
procedures required to accomplish specific tasks under changing or unexpected circumstances.
8. Skill and experience in operating and maintaining gas powered equipment such as chainsaw, weed
eater, etc.
9. Recognition that in order to serve Yurok People one must know as much as possible about Yurok history,
culture and values.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Chainsaw FALA/B Certificate
2. Familiarity with computers, including word processing and spreadsheets.
3. Class C California Driver’s License
4. High School diploma or equivalent certificate
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
1. All applicants are subject to the Tribe’s Drug and Alcohol Policy including pre-employment screening.
2. Valid state issued driver’s license and/or the ability to obtain a California or Oregon driver’s license.
Must be insurable on the Tribe’s insurance policy.
3. Must pass a background investigation and fingerprint clearance.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Must have the ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
With ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients,
and other employees of the organization. Knowledge of Yurok language is preferred but not required.
REASONING ABILITY:
Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral and/or diagram form.
With ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must pass the DOI Fire Fighter Physical with no restrictions. While performing the duties of this job, the
employee is frequently required to walk, stand and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is
required to sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk and hear. The
employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, have stamina and sufficient physical ability and
dexterity to accomplish fieldwork that includes strenuous exertion, inclement weather, and long hours in the
field.
VISION REQUIREMENTS:
1. Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less).
2. Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors).
3. Depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships).
4. Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).
