Forestry Technician I – contract position (furloughable) – CONFEDERATED SALISH AND KOOTENAI TRIBES OF THE FLATHEAD NATION – $16.95 to $18.64 per hour

SALARY: $16.95 to $18.64 per hour including benefits

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
This position is not a Testing Designated Position (TDP) within the definition of the CSKT Drug Testing Policy. The successful applicant, if not already employed by the Tribes must pass a pre hire drug test.

DUTIES:
The Forestry Technician I is a technical forestry position with varied responsibilities for timber management, preparation and administration of timber sales and permits. This entry-level position will receive a considerable degree of supervision, but will be given latitude for judgment on simpler projects. Typical tasks are listed below.

• Administers Contracts and permits.
• Maintains Contracts and permits records, including scale, sale activity, stumpage monies,
etc.
• Performs timber trespass evaluations
• Performs timber sale appraisals
• Gathers and compiles data for Forester Officer’s Reports, FORBASE, timber sale
contracts and environmental assessments
• Lays out road center lines and skid trails, and assists with switchback layout and other
specialized structures
• Marks timber and unit boundaries as directed by supervisor and by written silvicultural
marking guides
• Designates and traverses the boundaries of cutting units with GPS units
• Implements pre-designed timber cruises on logging units and allotments
• Scales logs
• May occasionally train, supervise, and evaluate one to three employees in marking, cruising, traversing, painting boundaries, and other duties (aides or other like-grades)
• Initiates NEPA on small projects
• Maintains quality of crew’s work on occasion
• Performs other duties as assigned, including, but not limited to wildfire suppression and prescribe burning.

MINIMUM RECRUITING QUALIFICATIONS AS REFLECTED ON TRIBAL
EMPLOYMENT APPLICATION:
• High school diploma
• 2 years minimum of extensive experience, demonstrating proficiency within four (4) or more of the following areas: timber marking, cruising, scaling, habitat typing, insect and disease identification, unit layout, road centerline location, legal boundary line location,
fire-fighting, thinning, planting, supervision of 2 or more employees, scaling or timber sale contract or permit administration. OR completion of a two (2) year forestry technical school and one-year extensive experience in 3 or more of the functional areas listed above.
• A valid Montana State driver’s license and a federal operator’s permit are required for vehicle operations
• Must not have received a disciplinary action that resulted in termination in the past 2 years

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS AS DETERMINED THROUGH INTERVIEW AND PREVIOUS EMPLOYMENT REFERENCES:

• Basic knowledge of the English language and basic mathematics
• Working knowledge of timber marking and major silvicultural systems and treatments used on the Reservation
• Basic knowledge of common insect and diseases of the reservation, habitat typing procedures, and simple cruise or stand exam procedures
• Basic knowledge of the common tree species of the Reservation
• Basic knowledge of personal computers, hand-held data recorders, and electronic recording instruments such as global positioning systems (GPS)
