Fuels Module Crew Member – Keweenaw Bay, MI

Three (3) Ful-time, non-exempt positions

SALARY:

Grade 5 $16.47/hr with High School Diploma
Grade 6 $18.40/hr with Firefighter Type 2 (FTT22)
Grade 7 $19.47/hr with Firefighter Type 2(FTT2) with Faler 2 (FAL2) as per the NWCG 310-1 Incident Qualifications Guide

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
Must be at least 18 years of age, to work in this position. Must be at least 21 years of age, have a valid unrestricted driver’s license, insurable to operate KBCI vehicles or personal vehicles during work hours. This is a requirement of our Insurance carrier. Must also sign the KBCI Driving Record Check form.
Maybe required to operate a Federal Government motor vehicle as part of your official duties and shall be required to complete required training to obtain a Federal Government license.Must have completed the following training: S- 190, S-130, L-180, I-100, and I-700. For incumbents without prior firefighting experience, the training must be completed within 30 days of appointment. • Must possess a comprehensive knowledge of basic fire behavior as influenced by fuel, weather, and topography and of the duties and responsibilities of initial fire attack suppression.
Must possess a working knowledge of the Incident Command System (ICS) organization and operation to work effectively within the structure.
Must possess skills in basic orienteering (use of Global Position Units (GPS), compass, reading topography, and quad maps) and multi-channel radio communication ot locate fires, properties, and local landmarks effectively.

Must be able to lift 50+ pounds throughout an 8-hour shift.

Must be in good physical condition and pass the Work Capacity Test as the Arduous level within 03 days of hire and annually thereafter. Must obtain a clearance per DOI Medical Standards to be able to take the WCT test.

Must practice safety habits at al times while at work.

Must have good working knowledge of Microsoft Office software.

Must have a good working knowledge of GIS mapping applications.

Must have report writing experience.

Must have a basic practical knowledge of fire behavior and suppression tactics to ensure safe wildland fire suppression operations.

Must have good written and verbal communication skills.

May require the incumbent to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) to operate
motor vehicle.

Must possess a valid, unrestricted driver’s license, a good driving record, and must be insurable. Must obtain a Federal Government operating license annually. * Must sign the KBIC Driving Record Check form.

Employment is contingent upon the satisfactory result of a Security Background Check, pre-employment drug testing, pre-employment physical, and successfully passing the Work Capacity Test at the arduous level.

VETERAN PREFERENCE: Preference will also be given to Veterans (need DD214). DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Functions as a skilled module crew member on a fuels module. May function as a crew member on an engine, helitack, or hand grew. Utilizes a variety of specialized tools, equipment, and techniques while actively suppressing wildfires, such as Pulaski, shovel, McLeod, ax, and chainsaw to control the spread of wildfire. A module member on a wildland fire engine may work as a trainee engine operator driving the engine, operating the pump, and making hose under the direction, of the engine supervisor/ leadership.

As a helitack module member, loads helicopters determines weight calculations, completes crew manifests and may rappel and/ or participate ni short-haul operations from a hovering helicopter near ground level in remote areas to construct helispots, or to attach small fires, hot spots, and spot fires.
Performs basic fireline activities such as line construction, hose layout, operations of pumps and accessories, lopping and scattering of fuels using hand tools and holding, patrolling, monitoring, and mop-up operations. Move dirt, chop brush, small trees, etc. to construct fireline. Is responsible for observing the rules of wildland firefighting safety. Applies practices and techniques to minimize resources damage.

Under the direction of a more seasoned crewmember or with one or more module crewmembers, may be assigned specialized assignments such as tree falling, backfire and burnout, mobile and stationary engine attack, construction of helispots and hover hookups.

Serves as a skilled wildland firefighter on an organized module during prescribed burns, monitoring and controlling the fire and collecting data on fire weather and fire behavior. Also, as a member of a module/crew, performs project work such as fuel inventory and hazard fuel. reduction projects.

Participates in fire and safety training in the techniques, practices, and methods of fire suppression and the safe, efficient operation and use of tools, equipment, and vehicles used in fire line activities, with emphasis on those used in the particular function to which assigned.

Participates in module/crew proficiency checks and drills. Participates in safety sessions and fire critiques. Ensures own and welfare and safety of others ni al aspects of the assignment.

Cleans maintains, reconditions, and stores firefighting tools and equipment. Inventories fire supplies and equipment.

Under the direction of a more senior firefighter, performs preventative maintenance inspections and services and makes minor repairs to the engine; inspects, checks, and services accessories such as pump, water lines, tank, reel or pump power plant; and keeps ni fire readiness. Inspects, cleans, and stows hose. May make minor repairs and basic adjustments the the pump while in use.

• May drive and operate firefighting vehicles for safe and efficient operation.
• May perform project work such as fuel inventory, preparing associated reports, and hazard fuel reductions projects.
• May perform project work such as road and trail maintenance, habitat manipulation, and miscellaneous equipment and facilities maintenance.
• May support the work of higher-level workers ni forestry research efforts; ni the marketing of forest resources; or the scientific management, protection, and development of forest resources.
• May perform al-risk emergency management duties such as emergency response, mitigation, and recovery efforts.
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
