Whitebark Pine Reforestation Forester contract position

$26.01 to $28.62 per hour including benefits Monday, May 12, 2025 @ 5:30 p.m.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
This position is not a Testing Designated Position (TDP) within the definition of the CSKT Drug Testing Policy. The successful applicant, if not already employed by the Tribes must pass a pre-hire drug test.

The Whitebark Pine Reforestation Forester fills a generalist position responsible for most phases of forest land management at the project level, ensuring that all proposed activities meet applicable Tribal, Federal and State regulations and laws. Projects assigned will be of a moderate to highly complex nature, often controversial, with numerous conflicting social, political and biological factors. Primary duties of this position include:

DUTIES:
Supervises personnel in the Reforestation Section

  • Daily supervision of 1-4 forestry technicians or aides and occasionally other forestry personnel assigned to the Reforestation Section.
  • Directs planting operations for 30-60 seasonal planters.
  • Oversees overall Whitebark Pine crop production, planting and aerial seeding activities.
  • Daily supervision of interns/forestry personnel during Whitebark Pine habitat recon, mapping, and restoration efforts.

    Plans all projects to be accomplished by the Whitebark Pine section

  • Completes annual work plan for planting Whitebark Pine and regeneration surveys.
  • Plans and prioritizes projects to be accomplished.
  • Provides technical advise on reforestation matters.
  • Conducts and organizes reconnaissance for regeneration surveys to help coordinate thinning schedules.
  • Schedules planting surveys of units planted.
  • Utilizes reconnaissance data of regeneration surveys to help coordinate thinning schedules.
  • Assists in BAER/BAR restoration planning and implementation.
  • Recon and select seed and cone collections sights.
  • Schedules Whitebark Pine caging and cone collection areas.
  • Coordinates restoration efforts with local, regional and national panels.
  • Develop a Whitebark Pine restoration plan in coordination with other agencies.
  • Participates in IDT NEOA development. Provides WBP write up.

Compiles, organizes and evaluates stand treatment data cards and computer records

  • Coordinates with timber sale personnel to obtain stand prescription data.
  • Evaluates recommended treatments prescribed for Whitebark Pine stands.
  • Keeps stand treatment cards current for future reference.
  • Updates and maintains computer files for stand treatment prescriptions.
  • Helps Administers forest stand data base.
  • Helps maintain and establish a Whitebark Pine data base to help with restoration needs.
  • Maps and collects data pertaining to Whitebark Pine restoration activities.
  • Provides reports and updates for Whitebark Pine related grants to include the “America the Beautiful” grant to appropriate entities or agencies.

    Initiates and accomplishes various forest related stud projects

  • Sets objectives for study analysis.
  • Designs, lays out and evaluates study objectives and results.
  • Coordinates study plans with other agencies that may be involved.
  • Collects, organizes and stores needed data from designated studies.
  • Evaluates collected data and processes to obtain desired information.
  • Maintains and updates the plot area and data of planted Whitebark Pine blister rust resistance testing.
  • Participates with crown of the continent white bark pine restoration strategy. Coordinates various activities relating to timber stand improvement and forest health
  • Participates in insect and disease detection and management activities.
  • Coordinates tree improvement program and related activities.
  • Conducts technical information meetings and training sessions.
  • Coordinates with Timber Sales about Whitebark Pine restoration strategy within sale areas.
  • Formulates and implements follow up treatments pertaining to Whitebark Pine restoration plan.
  • Coordinates restoration strategies with local, regional and national teams pertaining to Whitebark Pine. Fire suppression and prescribed burning
  • Participate in fire suppression activities where qualified (red-carded).
  • Participate in prescribed fire activities where qualified (red-carded). Performs other duties as required.

    MINIMUM RECRUITING QUALIFICATIONS AS REFLECTED ON TRIBAL EMPLOYMENT APPLICATION:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry, Forest Management or related Natural Resource Degree related to Restoration Ecology.
  • A Masters degree and/or three (3) years’ experience would be preferable.
  • Working or research in high elevation forest including Whitebark Pine stands.
  • Possession of a valid Montana Driver’s License. Must be able to qualify for a Bureau of Indian Affairs Motor Vehicle Operator license.
  • Physical exam and/or pack test for fire activities as required by government regulations.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain pesticide applicators license. SUBMIT:

    4. Proof of enrollment from a federally recognized Tribe if other than CSKT.
